Major announcements and industry insights at Helitech International 2017

Day one of Europe’s leading helicopter expo and conference provides platform for announcements from Safran Helicopter Engines, Leonardo, Coptersafety, DART Aerospace and H+S Aviation as well as discussion of the current helicopter market

London, 3 October – Helitech International, Europe’s largest commercial helicopter expo and conference, has returned to London for a busy first day of innovation and industry insights. Several of the rotorcraft industry’s major players announced their latest product launches, deals and developments, whilst conference programme sessions surrounding industry challenges, market updates and trends and evolving technology proved incredibly popular with visiting rotorcraft professionals and exhibitors alike.

Major announcements across the show
Several of the industry’s top suppliers used day one of the show as a platform for their key announcements, including Safran Helicopter Engines, Leonardo, DART Aerospace, Coptersafety and H+S Aviation.

Safran launched Aneto, its high power engine family for the super-medium and heavy helicopter market. During the packed on-stand event, Safran also announced that leading helicopter operator Leonardo has selected the Aneto-1K to power its twin-engine AW189K. The first flight took place in March 2017, and the aircraft is due to enter service in late 2018.

Alongside the deal with Safran, Leonardo held an official signing of a contract with Uni-Fly A/S of Denmark for two AgustaWestland AW169 light intermediate twin engine helicopters. The aircraft will enter service in the first quarter of 2018 to perform wind farm support operations for DONG Energy at Hornsea Project One, in the North Sea, 120km offshore from Humberside, UK. The order marks the first contract for the AW169 model in Denmark as well as the first AW169s to be used to support wind farm duties in the UK, following successful operations carried out in the North Sea for other customers in Europe. These helicopters will feature a specially customised configuration including a dedicated offshore interior and rescue hoist to support maintenance personnel working on the wind turbines.

Over on the Coptersafety stand, the flight training service provider officially announced a partnership with Nordic Airbus Helicopters distributor, Østnes. This will improve the operational safety of Airbus H125 (previously known as AS350) helicopters in the Nordic countries, as well as position Østnes as an authorised dealer for Coptersafety’s training services, which take place out of Coptersafety’s dedicated training centre near Finland’s Helsinki International Airport.

BBA Aviation Global Engine Services company H+S Aviation announced the recent approval of Motorflug as a Rolls-Royce M250 Authorised Service Centre under H+S Aviation’s current M250 AMROC agreement. It extends the company’s ability to provide regional support, such as field services, to M250 customers through Motorflug Baden-Baden’s OEM-approved capabilities.

Lastly, during an on-stand drinks reception, Steve Ghaleb, Vice President of Commercial Operations for DART Aerospace, revealed that the company will be opening a new warehouse in Amsterdam in order to increase inventory and better service the European market.

Exclusive insights
Among the topics being discussed as part of Helitech International 2017’s Insights Seminars and Technical Sessions programme, Mark Zuccaro, President and CEO of the Helicopter Association International, addressed the current threats facing the industry such as the pilot and technician shortage. Zuccaro reports that the number of pilots gaining FAA Private Pilot certificates decreased by 66% between 1980 and 2017. This is largely due to a reduction in the next generation entering the industry, prohibitive costs and career competition.

Other threats include the privatisation of Air Traffic Control, erosion of regulatory authority and the increase in unmanned aircraft.

Later in the day, Flight Ascend Consultancy issued a market update, discussing the tepid recovery from the downturn in the Oil & Gas sector in the past three years. The panel of representatives shared encouraging insights into how the rotorcraft sector is on course to yield an increase in both turbine and piston platforms for the first time since 2013 and, while 2018 will be a tough year, steady growth in OEM sales are predicted.
